Wesley Evers is a recurring character in Seasons 1-2 and a main character in Seasons 3-7 of The Rookie. He was a defense attorney in Seasons 1-4 and became an assistant district attorney in Season 5. He is the husband of Angela Lopez and the father of Jack and Emmy. He is played by Shawn Ashmore.
History[]
Season 1[]
Evers appears first as Isabel Bradford's public defender in the episode "The Ride Along". He encounters Angela Lopez in "Flesh and Blood" as they clash over the treatment of a robbery suspect, but eventually they go out on a date. This seems to lead to something more involved, as in "Heartbreak" he and Lopez have slept together at least once and have trouble with Valentine's Day plans.
Wesley says that he attended Whittier Law School, which is located in Costa Mesa, Orange County, California.
Also in "Heartbreak", Wesley tells Lopez that his father died last year, and that the name "Melanie" that Lopez found in his cell contacts is his stepmother.
In "Green Light", Lopez tries to talk to Wesley about her trust issues, but he refuses to continue the conversation. Later, he calls Lopez and offers support after he hears of the captain's death.
By the time of "Homefront", he and Lopez have apparently made up; they flirt in the break room and play footsie under the table in Interrogation.
In "Free Fall", Lopez hesitates to tell him about a possible terrorist attack because "this is the kind of civil liberties issue he gets on his soapbox about".
Season 2[]
In Season 2, Evers has moved in with Lopez, and they navigate relationship issues such as differences in housekeeping and the fact, revealed in "The Bet", that Evers' family is "super rich".
In "Fallout", Evers takes shelter in an underground bunker with some courtroom personnel, prisoners, John Nolan and Jessica Russo. Just before the all-clear is sounded, one of the prisoners stabs Evers and attempts to escape using a judge as hostage; however, the prisoner is quickly subdued, but Evers undergoes emergency surgery and later wrestles with ongoing post-traumatic stress.
In "Breaking Point", when Evers has to represent a young boy accused of brutally murdering his mother by stabbing her repeatedly, he has flashbacks to his own stabbing in "Fallout", and rushes out of the interrogation room in a panic, leaving Lopez concerned for his well-being.
In "The Dark Side", Evers drinks heavily and nearly overdoses on pills as a result of his PTSD. He also lies to Lopez about it, telling her he was at the office when really he was at the bar drinking. Later, Lopez returns home to find him passed out on the sofa, and she has to wake him up before he overdoses.
In "Day of Death", Lopez calls sick into work to take care of Evers and she confronts him about the previous incident. He tells her that he wasn't thinking about the consequences of his actions when he did it. After they are both called into the station by Tim Bradford to help in the search for Lucy Chen following her abduction, Evers tells Lopez that he is ready to return to work again.
In "Follow-Up Day", Evers confronts his mother after an unlicensed gun was found in her car during a traffic stop. Evers also learns that her boyfriend, Christian Roberts, who owned the gun was wanted for murder. Ultimately, his mother gives up Roberts location, allowing Lopez and Jackson West to arrest him.
In "The Overnight", he proposes to Lopez, and she happily accepts his proposal.
Season 3[]
In the beginning of Season Three, Lopez is promoted to Detective and also discovers she's pregnant. Evers has to tell her about a possible genetic issue with the baby, along with dealing with his mother, who seems to be trying to take charge of their wedding. Tests shows that the baby does not carry the Fragile X gene, and Lopez' pregnancy proceeds without further complications.
By the end of Season Three, Wesley's mother has cooperated with Lopez' wishes, and with her help, Wesley and Angela prepare to get married in a last-minute ceremony in "Threshold".
Season 4[]
When Angela is abducted in the final episode of season 3, Wesley spends the first episode calling in favors to find and rescue her. His last resort is to go to Elijah Stone, a crime lord who helps in exchange for Wesley's services. Wesley gives the info to the squad and ends up in Guatemala, at the mercy of La Fiera and her crew, and sets in motion the events that lead to Angela's escape. However, they're separated and Wesley is taken away to be executed; Nolan arrives just in time to prevent his death and to help him fight his way to the waiting escape transport, where he reunites with Angela. Three months later, he becomes the father to their son Jackson Evers.
In "In the Line of Fire", Elijah Stone, the criminal who made a deal with Wesley to find Angela, reminds Wesley of his promise to serve as his "dirty lawyer" and makes it clear that Wesley's family will be targeted if Wesley doesn't come through.
In "Red Hot", Wesley tries to stay within the limits of the law while trying to appease Stone and get Stone's henchman released - but he discovers that Stone had the henchman murdered in his cell to keep the man from making a deal.
In "Day In The Hole", Wesley comes down to the station and is surprised to find there is a criminal who resembles Bradford. He silently stared at the picture along with the gathered crowd at Chen's computer before looking at the arriving Bradford who questioned it.
Season 5[]
As a result of the backlash because of his dealings with Elijah, he loses his job as a defense attorney and becomes an Assistant District Attorney in "Labor Day"; he initially has a hard time finding a case and gives plea deals to them. Sean Del Monte soon tells him to find a case to prosecute until Angela lets him know about a crew of dirty cops that she is investigating. Knowing this is the case he lives for, he happily takes on this case and provides the squad warrants. Wesley soon asks for more evidence, to give him headway, and the crew are apprehended and incriminated with substantial evidence. At the end, Wesley celebrates about being able to handle his first prosecution, though Angela tells him that he shouldn't expect this all time.
During "The Fugitive", he and Angela were preparing for work but were horrified to find his mother-in-law beaten and bloodied on the porch, quickly rushing her to the hospital. Much later, he represented three of his brothers-in-law, pro-bono after it was revealed the assailant was after one of them. He told a protesting Angela that this was an effort to get them to like him and he was successful, especially when he is praised by them at dinner.
In "The Reckoning", he goes to the deposition for his actions in representing Elijah Stone. However, he is dismayed that Stone's lawyer is his ex-fiancé who he broke up with after cheating on her. It becomes clear that there is still some animosity between the two and Monica even disrupts his evening with Angela. Wesley is forced to tell his wife of his history with Monica.
In "The Enemy Within", Wesley's ex-fiancé gets taken by Elijah Stone and convinces him to let her go so she can get information from the LAPD and the DA's Office. She walks into Wesley's office beaten up and tells the police she is willing to work with them. Wesley has his doubts. The LAPD finds Elijah and arrests him. Before getting arrested, Elijah Stone orders a hit on Wesley at his home. Wesley and the private security hired, Charlie Bristow, fight off the hitman in the home.
Season 6[]
In "The Hammer", Wesley represents John Nolan when Oscar sues him in regards Nolan's treatment of him in "Death Notice". Wesley is dismayed that Oscar got Monica Stevens to represent him. Later, John noted that Wesley must be having a hard time with the two people he detests the most, since Monica is an ex and Oscar is the person who stabbed him.
Season 7[]
In "Darkness Falling", he is called by Angela on how one of his former clients Harrison Novak was actually a guilty in a series of murders. However, he becomes horrified when the latter contacts him, quickly telling notifying the LAPD to track the call once Novak makes it clear that he is continuing his spree by targeting Sorority girls. Fortunately, Novak severely underestimated the girls, and ended up getting beaten up by them to the point Lopez and Harper had to save him, Harper still arrested him though, remarking that any of the sorority girls were welcome to join LAPD.
During "Wildfire", he is dismayed to learned that Nolan witnessed James kiss another woman and tells the latter he has to keep quiet though admonishes Nolan for having to give him this should his wife find out and question him.
In "April Fools", as a result of many criminals falling for a series of April Fool's post set up by an egotistical influencer, he is forced to deal with the situation. When the influencer is dismissed and creates a post stating crime is legal, the city falls into complete panic and Wesley is forced to come down to HQ and tells the squad to ensure the arrests are by the book to properly prosecute the offenders.
