Biography[]

Season 1[]

Ten years before the events of the first season, Grey was shot the last week he served as a patrol officer. He spent two weeks in ICU; his partner, Dennis Rowland, was killed by the same bullet that injured Grey. They were shot by Russell Scanlin, who was high on drugs at the time. Angela Lopez was a rookie officer at the time the incident occurred and was at the scene with Grey while Rowland died in her arms.

At the beginning of the series, Grey has been married to his wife, Luna, for nineteen years; they have a daughter, Dominique, a senior in high school, who interns at different police stations every Saturday.

Grey works as a watch commander in his precinct, which means that he is supervisor to the officers.

Grey initially sees Nolan as a "walking midlife crisis" but eventually decides to reserve judgment rather than run Nolan out of the force immediately.

Season 2[]

In Season 2, Grey is shown to have more trust of Nolan, but not of Nyla Harper or Jackson West. In fact, he makes West continue to wear long sleeves until he can prove himself to Grey, which he does in "Tough Love".

In "Warriors and Guardians", after Harper rejoins the force, Grey privately confides with Nolan in his office that he does not trust Harper. He is also not pleased with Harper's arrogance or disregard for police protocol, revealing to Nolan that he placed the two of them together as Harper would devour a twenty five year old rookie whereas Nolan who's the oldest rookie in the LAPD stands a chance.

In "Clean Cut", after Harper asks Grey to write an early annual evaluation of her for court hearing purposes, Grey rides along with Harper for the first time and is impressed with her performance, promising that he will write a good evaluation of her for the judge. Grey also reveals that his daughter Dominique has been accepted into Cornell for college. He is debating whether or not to move to New York with his family to be closer to his daughter. He also reveals that his wife Luna has been "begging" him to retire from the LAPD.

In "Hand-Off", Grey and Angela Lopez testify in a parole hearing regarding Russell Scanlin, the man who shot Grey and killed his partner; the incident took place 10 years prior to the events of the series. Grey delivers a powerful testimony to the parole board, and Scanlin's parole is denied.

Season 3[]

In the season's opening episode, Sergeant Grey has to take Officer Nolan into custody for his involvement in investigating Detective Armstrong's alleged crimes. Nolan and Harper are both reprimanded and Nolan is held over for an additional month in the FTO program.

A recurring story line in season 3 is that of Jackson West dealing with his new T.O., Doug Stanton, whose words and actions mark him as a racist. West and Grey have several charged discussions over systemic racism, and ultimately, Stanton is caught in a betrayal of his oath and of his rookie and suspended.

Grey and Nolan team up to take action against an unscrupulous CBD distributor in "Sabotage", after Nolan's mother has convinced Luna Grey to start her own business - and overcharged her for both the startup and the defective product.

Season 4[]

At the beginning of season 4, when Jackson West is killed, Grey enlists Officer Chen in hunting down and arresting the murderer. Grey's anger and grief affect him during the arrest, but he follows his life-long training and brings the man in rather than shooting him on sight. He also likened West to a son of his.

When Grey is called to testify in a case where other witnesses are being killed ("Hit List"), he ends up in the hospital, where he admits to Nolan that before that incident, he's never killed in the line of duty.
