"The Fugitive" is the fifth episode of the fifth season of The Rookie. This is the eighty-first episode of the series overall.[1]
Summary[]
Officer John Nolan and Officer Celina Juarez are on the hunt for a fugitive after a car incident goes awry. Meanwhile, a past injury comes to haunt Tim and Lucy comes through during his time of need in more ways than one.[2]
Plot[]
Angela and Harper wait outside as Lopez brothers arrive. Angela identifies the three men from oldest to youngest Damian, Benjamin, and Cruz while revealing some of their history. She has another brother named Bruno but reveals that he went to college and is staying in New York so he would not be involved. Angela tells her curious brothers that their mother is in the hospital after being attacked and the assailant told her one of her sons is running out of time so she wants to know which one of them is in trouble. Each brother quickly denies any involvement but are not believed and Angela tells him they were plenty of time to convince her in interrogation.
The Lopez brothers are interrogated by Harper, before Wesley enters claiming he is representing them pro bono. An outraged Angela questions this and he explains this is a perfect opportunity for him to get one of her brothers to like him, despite her saying that one of her brothers is at fault for the attack on his mother-in-law. However, he says that is speculation and continues with his act, earning praise from each brother for his act. One by one each gives his story while claiming innocence, leaving Angela pondering on whom to believe. Grey then updates Angela on how the hospital is on lockdown with the fugitive, to her disbelief until he assures her Thorsen is watching her mother.
At the hospital, Aaron is talking to Emilia, who promises to set him up with one of her nieces if he sets up one of her sons with his cousins. He is intrigued by the offer, especially when he sees her attractive niece who is a dancer.
Much later, John and Juarez are patrolling the hospital and John gets a notification that the fugitive killed a woman in a burglary and was shot by the husband in his escape. Juarez realizes that this is the reason why he fled, as he would be looking at life in prison when they catch him. After a talk with Bailey, John discovers the fugitive's clothes and see he tried to patch himself up as best he could.
In his car, Benny is shown with a gun pondering his thoughts before Angela enters and Harper is at his window. Angela questions her brother on his actions while Harper listens in and he explains he had to borrow from a loan shark after going bankrupt and that he didn't mean to get their mother hurt and wants to fix it. Angela orders him to stand down and let her handle this both as his sister and a cop.
