The Rookie Wiki

Officer Quigley Smitty is a recurring character on The Rookie and his badge number is 28717. According to Eric Winter's Instagram story, a union vote ballot reveals his first name to be Quigley. This was later confirmed in the episode "Real Crime". He is portrayed by Brent Huff. Smitty is generally lazy; he serves as a comic element for the show.

History[]

Season 1[]

Officer Smitty first appears in the episode "Plain Clothes Day" where he assists John Nolan and Talia Bishop during a botched raid, in which a case of mistaken identity ruins the bust that Nolan was attempting to make. This is Smitty's only appearance in the season.

Season 2[]

Smitty becomes a recurring character. He first appears in "The Night General" when he tries to convince Jackson West to move into the trailer park that he lives in after West is evicted from his apartment. However, West declines his offer and moves in with Lucy Chen instead.

In "Follow-Up Day", Smitty is shown being celebrated as an underachiever:

"We're celebrating Smitty's last day as Mr. Irrelevant. The sergeants' exam happens once every two years. Whoever scores the lowest gets called Mr. Irrelevant 'cause they got no chance at getting promoted." - Tim Bradford

In "The Bet", Smitty fills in for Angela Lopez as West's training officer when she rides with Nolan instead, and West is frustrated about how laid back and lazy Smitty is while on duty.

In "Casualties", when Nolan is asking around for suggestions on how to relieve stress, Smitty's response is "Goat yoga." Later in the episode, Nolan attends a goat yoga session with Grace Sawyer, meaning that he took Smitty's advice.

In "Hand-Off", after Lopez goes with Sergeant Grey to a parole hearing, West is forced to stay behind at the station and complete tasks that Grey has asked him to do. While cleaning in the storage room, West comes across an unsolved murder and vandalism case. Smitty is present with West in the interrogation room as the suspect confesses to the crime, as West needs to have a senior officer present in order to interrogate his suspect.

Season 3[]

In "Threshold", Smitty has served twenty-two years in the LAPD without incident, until serving one shift with John Nolan, in which they're attacked by a sniper sent by Sandra de La Cruz to kill Cesar Madrigal in retribution for her son Diego's murder. Smitty's length of service also made him a senior officer over Tim Bradford prior to Bradford's promotion to Sergeant I.

Season 4[]

In "Threshold", Smitty is part of the detail diverted by La Fiera's extraction team, and his fate was not known in until the beginning of season 4.

During "In the Line of Fire", Sergeant Bradford selects Smitty as his aide for a day.

In "Red Hot", Smitty announces his intention to be re-elected as union rep, apparently running unopposed as he has been for years. Harper comments that the union delegate shapes their benefits package and that she'd vote for Smitty as "no one is more focused on benefits than Smitty". By the end of the episode, Nolan has decided to run against him.

In "Hit and Run" and "Breakdown", Smitty tries unsuccessfully to run against Nolan for union rep. He makes several anti-Nolan posters, and tries to hand out water bottles to get the other officers to vote for him. His campaign is ultimately ruined by Tamara Colins when she secretly records Smitty admitting that the only way to beat Nolan was by "playing dirty" against him. This causes the officers that were on Smitty's side to turn against him.

By "The Knock", Nolan has won the union rep position in a landslide.

In “Hit List”, Smitty is amused to be assigned desk duty with Nolan. As the two conduct business, Smitty mostly shrugs off most visitors' complaints, forcing Nolan to have them come to him. After a long shift, Nolan finds a previous visitor dead, shocking Smitty. It was later determined that the death was caused by a hitman employed by crime boss Matteo Rubio, who is disposing of a grand jury list.

In "Real Crime", Smitty claimed that he had accidentally started the QAnon movement, while writing "This Is Us" fan-fiction. He claimed he used the letter "Q" (the individual or group upon whom the cult revolves) because it is his first initial. This revelation garnered both shock and annoyance from the rest of the squad.

In "Backstabbers", Smitty was resting in the breakroom and bore witness to Harper's engagement to James Murray. The pair didn't notice him until he spoke up tearfully to comment on their union being beautiful, something they appreciated, though annoyed by their invasion of privacy.

In "Enervo", much to Sgt Grey's surprise, Smitty and some other officers manage to stop one of the vehicles with the GPS location bomb. When Smitty calls in to inform his superior, Sgt Grey yells, "I take back every negative thing I've ever said about you!" Smitty is seen as confused and surprised about this.

In "Day In The Hole", he is seen along with most of the squad looking at Chen's computer once they discovered a criminal who resembles Bradford.

Season 5[]

During "Double Down", Smitty advises Nolan to go with recruiting instead of detective after he gets his golden ticket.

In "The Fugitive", Smitty becomes the acting sergeant after Bradford and Grey are hospitalized for their injuries. Grey explains it's because of seniority, so Chen had to go back to relieve Smitty. Smitty sends the officers to a pool party as a result. Once Chen fills in, he is actually relieved and told her that being in charge is exhausting for him, to her relief.

Season 6[]

In "The Vow", Chen and Thorsen run across Smitty relaxing in Dr. Blair London's reception area while on duty.

"It's where I come to take my breaks. Plus, they got top-notch snackage and the mood is super zen." - Quigley Smitty

In "Secrets and Lies", Nolan and Juarez come across Smitty's shop on the street. Nolan radios Smitty who is in a shop and asks where his shop is.

In "Punch Card", Smitty gets an elbow to the face from a gang member that he detained and observes, "Just completed my 'wounded in the line of duty' punch card. Pension will be firing on all cylinders now."

In "The Squeeze", he is enlisted by Juarez and Nolan to make a list of all of Dr. London's patients, as he frequently hangs out in the waiting room for snacks. Juarez and Nolan slightly exaggerate his part in the investigation to get his help:

"He told us, 'Smitty is the man,' and he's the only one we can trust with this." - Celina Juarez

Season 7[]

During "Out of Pocket", Smitty had the day off and was disturbed when Nolan came to him for help in finding a lead on Trey Duncan, former cellmate of fugitive Jason Wyler. Smitty was the arresting officer, and Nolan noted how Smitty handled the report with good diligence. Smitty gave what little info he had before returning to his sleep.

In "The Watcher", Smitty permits rookie cop Miles Penn to park his car in his trailer park, after Bradford orders Penn to find a new residence and Juarez directed him there. After Penn notifies Bradford of this news, Smitty joins in the call to let the latter see it was fine and Bradford allows Penn to stay there, because it's an area for cops.

In “The Mickey”, Smitty and other officers tease Nolan for his marriage trouble; Smitty gives Nolan a card for a lawyer who handled his last divorces, though the latter turns the offer down. Much later, Smitty is assigned by Grey to help Chen and her rookie Seth Ridley when Tamara Colins reveals a drug ring in her college. Smitty instructs Ridley on how to handle this. He notices Chen expressing worry over Tamara and Ridley possibly liking each other, before giving her advice about letting kids make their own choices and surprising her by stating his experience with it.

During “Chaos Agent”, Smitty is escorting an inmate to the bathroom before the power outage distracted him. The inmate attacks him before he flees, while Smitty reports his assault and says that the prisoner took his gun. The inmate is later detained after he attempts but failed to kill Bradford.

  • He finds Nolan a bad luck charm, which later became a recurring theme for the latter.
  • Smitty was unaware that most of the squad think little of him until Grey stated he took back every bad thing he said about him. Smitty responded by saying, “You said bad things about me?”
  • He states that he is the leader of the QAnon movement, his alias being "Q".
    • According to him, he was trying to make a fan fiction of This is Us and wrote something after suffering hallucinations from a mixture of medicines.
