"Now and Then" is the twelfth episode of the second season on The Rookie. This is the thirty-second episode of the series overall.

Summary

Nolan takes his son's fiancée, Abigail, on a ride-along after she shows interest in becoming a police officer. Meanwhile, Jackson’s relationship is becoming complicated at work.

Trivia

• "FOMO" stands for "fear of missing out".
• Nolan's reference to "Chuck Heston" is a pun on the name of one of Hollywood's legends, Charlton "Chuck" Heston. Intentional - or not?
• The actor playing the head of the meth gang, Darin Heames, once played an undercover cop on Castle ("Cuffed").
• Abigail quotes Mike Tyson: "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth".
• When someone is "cited out of jail", it means they are released with a promise for them to appear in court. It also means the court trusts them enough to get back to court when ordered on the specific date.
• The Office of the Chief of Police Notice, on September 10, 2015, split the Scientific Investigation Division (SID) into the Forensic Science Division (FSD) and TID (Technical Investigative Division) . The TID is located at the Piper Technical Center and consists of the Latent Prints (LPU), Photography, Polygraph and Electronics units.

Nolan: What we're here to do is awful. Death notifications always are. You spend the drive over dreading it. Trying to come up with words that will somehow soften the blow. Knowing that there aren't any. This boy lived here with his mother and his sister, and what we're about to tell them has the potential to destroy lives.

Bradford: What the hell is this? I let you run around with Harper for half a day and you start hugging people on duty? Abigail: Don't listen to him. He's all bark. I gotta pee.

Chen: You got a time machine? Bradford: I wish I did.

Chen: Don't make me pull the buried alive card.

Nolan: Deciding what's best for her is not protecting her - That's controlling her. And you're better than that. I shouldn't have played along yesterday, and that's on me, but I would be a failure as a father if I didn't tell you, you're falling down as a fiancé. Abigail deserves your empathy, and your honesty. You can't give her that, you should tell her it's over.

Lopez: Helping. Don't get all "Tim" on me. I just thought you should know.

Bradford: Lucy's okay? Lopez: She will be.

Bradford: You think because it's physical, it's worse? Tragedies always leave scars. Only some of them you can see.

Nolan: Yes. The paperwork is a bitch. Henry Nolan: Who's a bitch? Abigail: Oh, you're my bitch.

Chen: I-I know what you're trying to do, and I appreciate it, but this is different. I was tattooed by a sadist who etched my day of death into my skin. Bradford: Okay, but you didn't die. Okay? You lived. And now he's the one in the ground. But I'm not trying to tell you what to do with it. Okay? Burn it off, keep it, whatever gives you peace. All I'm trying to do, is give you some hard-won perspective. You can choose to see that tattoo as your greatest failure. But I see it as proof that you're a survivor. It wasn't your day of death, Officer Chen. It was the first day, of the rest of your life. And no one can take that away from you.
