The Rookie Wiki

"Mad About Murder" is the fourteenth episode of the seventh season of The Rookie. This is the one hundred twenty-second episode of the series overall.

Summary[]

Tim receives a strange message, launching a larger investigation into the dark web. Meanwhile, Celina works to take down a popular podcast, and Miles helps update the department’s training videos.

Plot[]

While pulling traffic cams, a horrified Nolan alerts Bradford and Lopez to a discovery. He identifies a walking civilian in the video as the hitman Malvado, stating he'd never forget that face and they note that he is too clever to sell his service on a site and realize he's likely the person cleaning up for his employer to avoid the traction. Nolan questions who hired him, just as Stensen arrives with an update before being shocked to hear someone like Malvado is the target and remarks that his capture would be a major boost. Stensen then relays that the FBI have linked the murders to a hitman site call Shadowstrike and they have arrested a Russian couple connected to it.

When interviewing the woman Nadia, she refuses to talk and declares that she and her partner can withstand torture for a large amount of time. However, her boyfriend instantly breaks and reveals that it is all a scam, quickly admitting he isn't Russian and that his name is actually Zach from Cleveland. A surprised Nolan inquires about Nadia, who Zach reveals is American too and her real name is Kailey. Zach then realized that Kailey was still masquerading and bemoans how he blew their cover. Kailey is annoyed by Zach giving in and demands a deal but gets silenced when hearing that a real hitman is out there. She soon admits what little she knows after their scam was exposed.

That night, Nolan comes home and Bailey is excited for the upcoming game. Nolan reveals to Bailey that Malvado is back and she becomes scared, fearing that if he was caught that he would try to use her contact with him, as a form of leverage. He tells her they will handle it in time when it happens.

LAPD and the FBI go to a go to a golf course, anticipating that Malvado would attempt to go after Mitch Yancy, an arrogant wealthy client, who frequently visited the site for various reasons. However, they note a sniper like Malvado would be nearby, arresting his target first and finding him on a roof of a country club. He promptly flees and is chased by Nolan and Tim Bradford, ambushing both officers and overpowering them until he was confronted by Angela Lopez who demanded he surrenders. He tried to shoot her with a hidden gun but was promptly shot dead by her.
