"Labor Day" is the second episode of the fifth season of The Rookie. This is the seventy-eighth episode of the series overall.[1]
Summary[]
Officer John Nolan is moving closer to his new role as a training officer. In preparation, he is tasked with overseeing Officer Aaron Thorsen and must uncover the truth about another officer's suicide. Meanwhile, Lucy's successful undercover assignment earns her an invitation for specialized training in Sacramento and she must decide if this is the path she wants to take.[2]
Plot[]
Chris has survived Rosalind Dyer's attempt on his life and recovers from his injuries at Lucy's apartment. Lucy and Chris discuss his situation before sharing flirty talk that is interrupted by a Det. Porter who has come to offer Lucy a chance to go to undercover school. Lucy is excited but is hesitant and Porter understands but tells her the chance is limited and leaves. Chris questioned this, and Lucy tells him she is concerned about him, even though he assures her that he is fine, but she refuses to leave his side.
Meanwhile, Wesley becomes an Assistant District Attorney but he has a hard time finding a case, due to his past of defending people. Del Monte takes note and tells Wesley to find a case where he can prosecute people instead of offering plea deals for them.
Sometime later, Nolan passes his TO exam and is scheduled to attend a certification course, and Grey allows him to be Thorsen's TO as a trial run. The two respond to a welfare check and discover the corpse of a deputy sheriff. The ME reveals to them that the man was in fact dead already, revealing he was murdered. When talking with the ex-wife of the dead cop, she reveals that he ran with a group of other cops. The ensuing investigation reveals that the deputy and a group of his colleagues worked undercover against drug dealers, but instead took the cash from the ones they were meant to arrest. The deputy who died left recordings of his interactions with his colleagues, which proves their corruption. Both Bradford and Lopez explain to Nolan and Thorsen that cops who give their group a name are always dirty.
At the DA office, Wesley is still struggling until Angela lets him know about the crew of dirty cops that she is investigating. Hearing this, he happily takes on this case and says he will be down. Upon arrival, Wesley quickly figures out that the crew is dirty and tells the team to get substantial evidence. Once given the warrant, they bring in a member who soon cracks when offered a deal.
Harper is in maternity leave and is due to give birth though becomes suspicious of her and James' neighbors. Once gun shots are heard, Smitty arrives and investigates, but doesn't find any evidence of her claims. Harper later sees the neighbors putting a corpse in a car trunk and reports her suspicions to Grey. The night she is due to give birth, the neighbors break into her house and one of them figures James just as Grey arrives. Harper manages to shoot the final man on her own, as James is alerted by the shot and runs upstairs to find the burglar wounded and Harper unharmed with their newborn. She casually tells her husband "It's a girl". After the squad arrive and apprehend the burglars, Lopez congratulates her friend and reveals that Harper was correct on every shady detail. Harper is relieved and states she is continuing her leave, as the police work will not be as satisfying as her bonding with her new priority. A smiling James tells her that he'll keep her to it.
Due to the deputy investigation, Nolan expresses that he didn't feel he teach Thorsen much, but he assures Nolan that his tactic was beneficial. Meanwhile, Wesley is pleased about being able to handle his first prosecution and celebrates, though Angela tells him that he shouldn't expect this all time.
