"In Justice" is the second episode of the third season of The Rookie. This is the forty-second episode of the series overall.

Summary[]

Officer John Nolan and Officer Nyla Harper are assigned to a community policing center to help rebuild their station’s reputation in the community. Nolan is determined to make a positive impact but Harper has her doubts.

As a consequence for their actions in the investigation into Nick Armstrong, Nolan and Harper are assigned to a community center in a rougher part of town where they meet James Murray, who claims that, as a white male cop, Nolan is "the problem in this community".

While on foot patrol, Nolan witnesses a teen break into a car and steal a bag. He pursues the teen to a locked-up playground, where Jackson interferes and tackles the suspect. When they take the suspect back into a police car, James Murray runs towards them, recording them with his phone and criticizing the way they are arresting the thief. Nolan and West reason with him and he walks away. He still does his best to gain the community's trust by reopening and remodeling a playground that was locked up to prevent drug dealers from entering. He and James later come to terms when James takes his sons over to the community center for some math tutoring.

Meanwhile Lopez is having her first day as Detective with a robbery alert in a mortuary with incinerator, when she found the ashes in the incinerator, has the instinct that was a victim and she need to probe that was a crime with the incineration. West got a new Training Officer and former LA county Sherriff Doug Stanton, and West had a bad feeling. And someone stole Lucy's car.

Trivia[]

  • When Bradford tells Chen he'll "file a blue page" on her, he's probably referring to the LAPD Manual, Volume 3: "760.75 NOTICE TO CORRECT DEFICIENCIES. The Notice to Correct Deficiencies (NTC), Form General 78, may be used to document deficient performances or censurable incidents, involving Department employees, including members of the Police Reserve Corps. The concerned employee shall receive the original (white) copy of the form and the blue copy shall be placed in his/her Division Employee Folder, for one year; then sent to Personnel Division, Personnel Records Section, for permanent retention and the pink and yellow copies shall be destroyed." [1]
  • Uncredited: Ashton Elijah as James Murray's son.
  • In the aftermath of the revelation that Armstrong had been a mole working for a crime family, new changes are revealed to have been designed and put place in all the divisions of the LAPD, three key ones being that any officer requesting a copy of a police report must now get written approval by a Sergeant and that after use, all copies must be destroyed and that failing to do so will result in discipline, every recruit in the LAPD academy must now report all contact with active-duty officers, no matter how small and that no officer will buy, own or possess a phone, even for personal use without also providing the department with the number.
