"Hit List" is the fifteenth episode of the fourth season of The Rookie. This is the sixty-ninth episode of the series overall.

Summary[]

Officer Harper puts Officer Aaron through “Plain Clothes Day,” but the exercise is interrupted by an unexpected visitor. Meanwhile, after two witnesses for an upcoming grand jury case are murdered, the team must track down the killers before it’s too late.[1]

Plot[]

Lopez interrogates Kellen Myers, a court officer, who is initially angry at being brought in late at night and wants a lawyer. He is silenced when Lopez reveals that the list of people that he provided to the cartel are being killed and her boss is in the hospital, while adding that a look at his finances reveals that he was paid off by Matteo Rubio. He is horrified to hear this and quickly asserts that he didn't know anyone was going to die and he thought that the cartel wanted the list because they were going to scare people before he agrees to cooperate. He reveals Rubio's gang wanted the identity of the prosecutor of the case: Sean Del Monte.

While driving to the DA office, Chen discovers that the phone line to the office is dead, which they quickly note isn't a coincidence, prompting her to phone Chris who is not near his phone because he is going over the case with Sean Del Monte. Chen calls again and Chris hears it this time and answers her call, as she warns him that the assassin is after Del Monte and that Chris could be in danger too, something that alarms him before the building's power shuts off, but the back-up lights activate. Chris notifies Chen of his situation, as she asks Bradford how long until they reach the building and Bradford answers "three minutes". Chen tells Chris to hide but he says that he has to get Del Monte before hanging up on her protests.

At the DA office, Chris spots a shadow entering and quickly ducks down when the killer scopes the office. Chris continues to hide while the killer leaves, until Del Monte comes out of the office, calling his name thus notifying the killer of his location. Watching the killer circle back, Chris quickly warns his colleague to get down before they're fired upon; they are unharmed and move to escape. The two prosecutors manage to evade the killer's repeated shots. The police arrive, led by Bradford, with the sergeant following the bullet sounds to pinpoint the killer.

Chris and Del Monte soon hide in a room, where they barricade the door, but the noise alerts the killer who finds the door and shoots at it to get in; just as he's about to enter, the police appear and order him to drop his gun, and he surrenders. As the killer is arrested, Lucy notifies the prosecutors it is safe, and they emerge unharmed. Lucy voices her relief that Chris is okay. However, Del Monte wants to get a drink to ease his nerves.

Afterwards, Aaron Thorsen is told by Nyla Harper that his plain clothes day will be rescheduled, something he looks forward to before they meet Morris Mackey. Harper leaves the pair to talk, and Mackey tells Aaron that the day will bring in views. However, Aaron voices his irritation at the way Mackey conducted himself and demands that he delete the footage of Dexter Hayes and when Mackey asks Aaron how he will do that. Aaron reminds him that his family name entitles him to do so; otherwise, Mackey can get a new job.

Meanwhile Lucy checks on Chris, with the two sharing a laugh at how he is still calm over his situation and his attempts to impress her. It cuts to Bradford notifying Grey that Rubio's hitman flipped on him, with Rubio being picked up by Lopez for his spree of murders.
