The Rookie Wiki

Ellroy Basso is a guest character on The Rookie. He is played by Alan Tudyk.

Biography[]

Ellroy is first seen meeting officer John Nolan at a crime scene. He is depicted as an awkward individual, as he explains his job of cleaning crime scenes often disturbs people, but he and John are able to get along. The two form a friendship, as he celebrates with John over John's birthday and when they are shot at by criminals. John later introduces Ellroy to Nell Forester, on whom Ellroy has a crush.

Ellroy tells John that his sister killed herself at their parents' house on her birthday, that is was "a long time ago", and that he "put everything the way it was, but nothing has been right since." John guesses that as the reason why Ellroy got into crime scene remediation.

In "Day In The Hole," Ellroy and Nell join John and Bailey when John is sent to the border for work. Ellroy has formed a romantic relationship with Nell Forester, as she shares his curiosity about crime scene minutiae; she calls him "the love of my life". In the course of John's assignment, he encounters his half-brother Pete Nolan and Pete's girlfriend Chastity.

John finds Ellroy practicing tai chi one morning at the motel, at which point Ellroys remarks, "Almost dying is a real motivator for learning how to defend yourself." This comes in handy in the final scenes of the episode.

When John and Officer Sanchez arrest a federal criminal, Ellroy comes to his aid after the criminal's gang appears and lays siege on the station. Ellroy soon finds himself confronted by a thug named Shark but calmly accepts the challenge. Ellroy is able to take down Shark, impressing John, and also directs the arriving cops to the criminals in the holding cell.
