Dexter Hayes is a minor character on The Rookie. He is played by Josh Stamberg.
Biography[]
Dexter was a friend of Aaron Thorsen's family, with his son Patrick being best friends with Aaron. Dexter would treat Aaron like a son and let him stay at his house when his parents traveled out of the country.
When Aaron and Patrick were adults, they stayed in Paris, but Patrick was murdered and Aaron was imprisoned for the crime, despite his protests of innocence. Dexter was devastated and betrayed by how he welcomed Aaron into his life and the latter supposedly took his son from him. He was also enraged and planning to get revenge when Aaron was able to get himself out of jail.
He first appears in "Hit List", when he fails to stop at a stop sign and he is pulled over by an unaware Aaron. After he exits the car, he and Aaron recognize each other; Dexter remarks he thought it was nonsense that Aaron moved to LA to become a cop. Thorsen family colleague Morris Mackey informs Nyla Harper of who Dexter is, to her shock. Dexter notes that he had plans to confront Aaron and exact revenge, before noticing the camera crew and asking if they intend to film his grief while asserting Aaron had this planned. Aaron tries to explain but Dexter is too enraged to listen and attempts to assault Aaron, forcing the reluctant Aaron to restrain him and arrest him. While in holding, Dexter stares at Aaron who feels guilt and decides to have Dexter released with no charges filed and Harper has leave to fill out the process. Once Dexter is released, he is still sour and voices his disbelief that a supposed criminal like Aaron became a cop.
He reappears in "Real Crime", annoyed by a camera crew visiting him again. He is notified by them about Morris Mackey's murder, and about him being a suspect because of his anger at them filming him when he was pulled over by Aaron. Dexter gives an alibi for his whereabouts, and it's verified, while voicing Aaron likely did it, still under the belief that Aaron killed his son. He also declares he shouldn't be surprised, since Aaron's whole family is crazy. This causes the crew to look into the implications about Aaron's father. Much later, it turns out Patrick and Mackey were murdered by Aaron's friend Rowan Clausen, who was smuggling drugs on Aaron's private jet; they were silenced by Rowan to avoid exposure, while Aaron was investigated both times. After Rowan's arrest, this news reaches all of LA, including Dexter. That night, as Aaron is clocking out of work, he is approached by Dexter, who asks if it's true that Rowan was the killer. Aaron tells him how Rowan confessed to the murders, as Dexter feels guilty for his accusation and apologizes for ever suspecting Aaron and begs forgiveness. Aaron easily does so, because he knows Dexter was grieving over his son, and they share a hug, satisfied Patrick finally got justice.
