The Rookie Wiki

Chris Sanford is a recurring character on The Rookie. He is an Assistant District Attorney, and Lucy Chen's ex-boyfriend. He is played by Kanoa Goo.

History[]

He first appears in "Heart Beat", where he encounters Lucy Chen at the precinct and reveals he is prosecuting Tyler, the young drug dealer who she and Bradford arrested. Lucy defends the young man, but Chris is unconvinced he can be redeemed, leading to an argument. He later informs Lucy that because she allowed Tyler to go free that he robbed a store and caused the clerk to have a heart attack.

In "End Game", he meets Lucy again and she reveals the clerk survived, something he heard from sources. Unlike before, he is willing to show leniency by having Tyler act as CI and implicate his boss, Curtis. Lucy did not like the idea, as Tyler would be in serious danger if he does so, and another argument ensues. Chris later meets with Jason Wyler who has turned himself in to make a deal of turning on his criminal boss, in exchange for lesser time. Chris has him admit his harassment of his estranged wife, planting drugs, and violating parole.

Bradford sets Chris up on date with Lucy for a double date with him and Ashley McGrady in "The Knock". It was an awkward date because Lucy and Bradford mostly talked while leaving Chris and Ashley silent. Later, he states he did not like being a third wheel and Lucy apologized for making him feel like that and offered another date. He agrees and took her to a hot dog spot, which happened to be her favorite place.

During "Hit List", he and Lucy are still dating but in debate over whether they are a couple. When Sergeant Grey is attacked and other witnesses for a murder case against a crime lord named Matteo Rubio end up murdered, Chris and the police realize Rubio had assassins silence the witnesses. He later tries to get Lucy the list of witnesses to stop the spree, but she refuses to take it because she didn't want to jeopardize their careers and he understands. That night, he goes over the case with Sean Del Monte, before he gets a call from Lucy warning him that the assassin is after Del Monte and that Chris could be in danger too, before the building's power shuts off. The shocked Chris notifies Lucy that he saw the killer enter and quickly warns Del Monte to get down before they are shot at, but they manage to evade the killer long enough for the police to arrive and arrest him. Afterwards, he is tended to by Lucy who is pleased he survived the ordeal. She later asked if the list was a way for him to impress her, while he jokingly asked if it worked.

In "Coding", he brings Lucy in to testify against serial killer Rosalind Dyer by prepping her for the trial and enabling her to watch her kidnapping by Dyer's follower Caleb Wright. After Lucy watches the whole thing, she is left shaken and works up the strength to tell Chris that she can't testify and he understands, saying they have another way to convict her. He takes Lucy to dinner, as a way to shift her mind from it.

Chris later invites Lucy to meet his mother in "Mother's Day", but she turns it down. Much later, he offered to take her out for dinner and she accepts though tells him, she needs to go find out how to put a curse on someone. He initially laughs it off until watching her walk off with her angry look revealing she’s serious.

In "Double Down", Chris is kidnapped and attacked by serial killer Rosalind Dyer who abducts him and cuts his wrists, while leaving him for dead. He is found barely alive by Lucy and Bradford, before being taken to a hospital.

In "Labor Day", Chris is shown to have survived his ordeal and after his release, he is tended to by Lucy. They joke about his ordeal before a detective arrives to talk with Lucy who turned down an opportunity to do undercover work. Chris questioned this and Lucy tells him she is concerned about him, even though he assures her that he is fine but she refuses to leave his side. Later, he tries again to show her the experience she'd get if she does it but she remains steadfast in refusing. At the end, he is happy Lucy decided to go after all.

By "Dye Hard" a month has passed, with Chris having recovered. He and Tamara Colins celebrate Lucy's completion of undercover school and she is appreciative. When he goes back to work, Lucy realized that he might be too focused on taking down Rosalind and has Wesley Evers keep an eye on him to ensure he doesn't go overboard. Chris had noticed Wesley has been hovering and noted what Lucy was doing but understood because he was fixated.

In "The Collar", Lucy realizes that she does not want to be with Chris anymore after he wants them to move in together, and by the end of "Take Back", Lucy has broken up with him.
