Ben McRee is a recurring character on The Rookie. He is played by Currie Graham.

Biography

Ben McRee is a friend and former college roommate of John Nolan. He owns a house in the hills above Venice that was once featured in Architectural Digest, and he let John live in the guest house rent-free after John's divorce.

John tells Lucy Chen that "after college, [Ben's] trust fund vested, and he just never stopped moving" ("Crash Course"), and he's never sure where Ben is. When Ben does come home, he mentions that he has a "foundation in Guatemala that empowers young mothers by helping them to start their own business" ("The Roundup").

Ben knows Nolan well enough to give him a hard time over dating Chen and not wanting to sell his house in Foxburg.

Some of Ben's leisure activities involve travel, theatre, art galleries, and hiking; in "Redwood" he's about to take Nolan hiking in Arizona for the day when the latter is called in to work. Ben apparently knows Wolfgang Puck ("Heartbreak") and for the Valentine's Day party he and Nolan host, he buys several cases of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which is not cheap. When Talia Bishop shows up to the party, he tells her he can make a dirty martini and that he has a lot of embarrassing stories about Nolan from college.

In "The Checklist", Ben is brutally beaten and carjacked. As he is leaving a coffee shop, he is attacked and robbed at gunpoint. Chen and Jackson West find him after responding to the carjacking call. Nolan and Detective Kevin Wolfe later arrest his attacker and shut down the operation Ben's attacker is working for.

Ben does not appear at all during Season 2, as Nolan has moved out of his guest house and into his own home.

In Season 3, Ben returns to L.A. for what he thinks will be Nolan's promotion to P2, and Nolan has to inform him that he's got another 30 days to go. Nolan also discovers that his son Henry has dropped out of college to take a full-time position with Ben's global foundation. Although upset, Nolan ultimately came to accept the choice and had Ben look out for his son. Ben was also pleased to hear Nolan went back to school and achieved his Masters' degree, while asking about his professor's attractiveness.
