"Backstabbers" is the eighteenth episode of the fourth season of The Rookie. This is the seventy-second episode of the series overall.
Summary[]
After the robbery of a train filled with valuable auction items turns deadly, the team is called to investigate. Meanwhile, Officer Chen has doubts about being Sergeant Bradford’s aid and is upset when he doesn’t give her the recognition she deserves. Elsewhere, Officer Harper takes matters into her own hands and makes a life-changing decision about her personal life.[1]
Plot[]
During date night, John and Bailey find themselves interrupted by Macer. He reveals that his officer is doing fine in recovery, but he has a new theory in the case. Taking out his phone, he shows them destroyed pieces of the vase and reveals how it has numbers sketched on its rim. Macer brings up how there were theories about Bloomfield being aware that the cops were closing in and he tried to hide some of his stolen money, so he thinks the numbers are passwords to offshore bank accounts. Both John and Bailey express surprised amazement at how Macer's theory makes perfect sense.
Harper brings James to the breakroom, where she apologizes for the abrupt proposal and noted she didn't think about his feelings. However, she assures him that she loves him and still wants marriage. Hearing this, James smiles and notes he is happy that he brought a ring with him, properly proposing to her and she accepts, though makes him swear to say she proposed first. They hug until hearing crying, noticing a sleeping Smitty who speaks up to comment on their union being beautiful, something they appreciate though annoyed by their invasion of privacy.
After LAPD discovers a fire has rerouted the train, they head to tracks and discover Danielle and Thackeray struggling over the box. The siblings are notified of the cops' arrival, with Danielle quickly pushing Thackeray and escaping. Thackeray is quickly detained, as Francis appears and steals the music box from his sister before leaving her to be arrested. Chen pursues him but he has a good distance, though Macer gives her a lift in the cart. Francis is soon found and surrenders, as the cops ask where his gun is and he answers in his pants, forcing Macer to retrieve it with his gloves. With that, Francis was arrested and Chen allows Macer to make the call. Macer proudly answers they have the suspect in custody.
A cuffed Francis is bought to the front, where both his siblings are in custody. Lopez asks him if he killed Shaw for the vase but he immediately demands a lawyer. However, Danielle quickly asserts that her brother did it in exchange for leniency while Thackeray backs her up by mentioning the weapon that he used to do it, causing Francis to tell his siblings they both suck, as he is hauled off. Macer is then congratulated by the squad for his hard work, with them noting that he has redeemed himself. He asks them for a hug and is accepted.
